Electric Vehicle Charging Guide in Tempe, AZ

Knowledge is Power: Learn About EV Charging

One of the factors that hold buyers back from leaping into the world of electric vehicles (EVs) is the fear of the unknown. Worries about running out of battery or finding a charging station cause concerns. We are here to put your worries to rest by sharing info on how charging works and how integrated it has become in our infrastructure. Let’s go over the different methods of charging, how much charge it offers, and where you can charge your EV.

The Whens, Wheres, and Hows of EV Charging

There are three charging methods commonly used: Level 1, Level 2, and Direct-Current (DV) Fast Charging. Here you will learn how much each charge each method delivers and where you can locate a power source.

Level 1 (120 Volts)

Your EV comes with a physical, portable charging apparatus. It will come in handy if you want to do at-home charging. Since level 1 operates on 120 volts, you can simply use your portable charging chord, attach it to your vehicle, and plug it into any common household outlet. That’s right– level 1 does not require any special installations and can be used on the go wherever there is a common household 120-volt plug nearby.

The downside to the convenience of Level 1 is that it charges very slowly. You can expect around 40 miles of driving range from 8 hours of charging. This is best for overnight charging and short commutes.

Level 2 (240 Volts)

Most Level 2 chargers can be accessed at a public charging station or home via a portable power cord. 240-volt outlets can be found in homes for larger appliances like dryers, refrigerators, deep freezers, etc. If you want to use Level 2 charging at home but don't have a 24-volt outlet within reach of your vehicle, you can hire an electrician to install one for you.

This method of charging is pretty great for at home and decent for on the go. You can reach full charge in around 3-8 hours.

Direct Charge (DC) Fast Charging

You can find this method of charging at some public charging stations, but mostly along highways and major roads. By the way, finding a nearby charging station is as simple as using your GPS like you would for a gas station. Many grocery stores, filling stations, shopping centers, and even some workplaces now house charging connections.

This is the absolute quickest way to charge your vehicle, making it best for long journeys. You can reach 100-300 miles of driving power in as little as 30 minutes!
